What Can One Person Do?

If you are reading this page and thinking there's nothing you can do to stop child abuse, think again!! By visiting this website, you're taking the first step to preventing abuse and neglect in your community. But you have to take the next steps. Here are some actions you can take to make a difference:

Be aware and report suspected cases of child abuse (to Child Protective Services at (734) 481.9110). Since child abuse often happens in the home, someone outside the home may have to make that call. Don't take the attitude that "I don't want to get involved" and don't assume that someone else will make the call!

Share parenting experiences with new parents, babysitters and other caregivers. Caring for an infant is hard work. Provide constructive advice for those experiencing it for the first time, or those getting ready to be a caregiver. Let them know that it's okay to be frustrated, but remind them that it's never okay to shake a baby.

Provide respite for caregivers. Being a new parent or caregiver can be frustrating, especially for a single parent or a caregiver who works. Volunteer to give that caregiver some time off. It might be your son or daughter, or it might be the woman down the street.

Support your local child abuse prevention agency, including the Washtenaw Area Council for children. We are grateful for any donation you may wish to make, and we welcome your involvement at a volunteer. Our programs are designed to stop child abuse before it starts.
