Body Safety Training

Teaching Children about being Safe

The Body Safety Training program was developed to educate children four years old and younger about personal safety, especially child sexual abuse. The objectives of the program include developing personal safety skills; and increasing knowledge and skills related to preventing or reporting child sexual abuse all presented in a manner that young children can grasp. The emphasis is on developing prevention skills in young children with information and techniques such as modeling, rehearse social reinforcement, shaping and feedback. Key program concepts include:

  • the child as the boss of his/her own body
  • identifying "private parts" and the proper terminology for these parts
  • distinguishing appropriate from inappropriate situations in which a bigger person (stranger, relative, acquaintance) looks at or touches their private parts
  • how to respond to inappropriate touch
  • it is never a child’s fault when they are abused

The program is suited for small groups of children (10-15), three and four years old. It is offered in a series of ten lessons which can be presented as one 15 minutes lesson a day for about two weeks, or tailored to meet the needs of your setting. Time is given for role-playing what is learned and the previous lesson is reinforced in subsequent lessons. Stories about children in potentially dangerous situations are used to practice how children could respond. Parents are provided with an informational piece about the program when it is instituted and are given regular updates about material covered in the trainings so they can reinforce them at home.
