Workshop Description: This workshop examines the lives of children who are often treated as adults, particularly those from marginalized communities. It will explore the historical, societal, and systemic factors, including the role of culture and race. The workshop will examine the phenomenon of adultification of children and its impact on their development, education, interactions with law enforcement, and access to social services, and explore ways to promote child-centered practices.

About the Presenters:

Crystal Campbell, a native of Flint, MI, lives in Ypsilanti Township with her husband and two happy children. Campbell is a two-time graduate of Eastern Michigan University (BS & MA). She is a communication and operations professional and strategist. She is a published writer with a penchant for Black speculative fiction. Committed to community, Campbell is the Chair-Elect of the Board of Trustees for Avalon Housing. She serves as a member of Washtenaw Community College Foundation’s Women’s Council and Vice-President of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., Rho Delta Zeta Chapter. Campbell is also chairperson of the Prince Hall Grand Chapter, O.E.S. scholarship committee for the State of Michigan. Professionally, Campbell serves as the Director of Operations for the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office, where she ensures operational alignment with the Office’s mission to “create a safer, more just, and compassionate for all”. Her personal mission is to add tangible value to each space she occupies, and to make room in those spaces for the folks coming up behind her.

Robin Batten has 30 years of experience working with children and adults. Her work history includes working with foster and adoptive children and parents, girls' residential treatment, college admissions, case coordination, adolescent sexual health, and child abuse prevention education. Robin is a program director for the Washtenaw Area Council for Children and an instructor for Washtenaw Community College and Purdue University Global. Her work in the community includes child abuse prevention, suicide awareness and prevention, anti-human trafficking, Women's Huron Valley Correctional Facility Volunteer, and serving as a Washtenaw County National Alliance on Mental Illness board member. Robin received a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Wayne State University and a master’s in human services from Purdue University Global. She is an HS-Board Certified Practitioner with a Public Health certificate, trained in Psychological First Aid, and a certified community ACEs (Adverse Childhood Experiences) trainer. Robin is a wife and mother of two. She enjoys spending time with her family, traveling, binge-watching, and listening to audiobooks. She’s passionate about the mental, physical, and spiritual well-being of children and families.
