Workshop Description: Dr. Malas will review the concept of behavioral dysregulation broadly, as well as associated terms such as agitation and aggression, and discuss the etiologic factors and mechanisms that influence the development of behavioral dysregulation, as well as review current evidence as to the risk factors, assessment, non-pharmacologic interventions, communication strategies, environmental modifications, pharmacologic management, and systems of care improvements to support youth at-risk for behavioral dysregulation.

About the Presenter:

Dr. Malas is a child psychiatrist with dual appointments in the Department of Psychiatry and the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Michigan Health System. He serves as the Division Director and Service Chief for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. His clinical and academic interests include pediatric delirium and neuropsychiatric diseases, behavioral dysregulation, suicide prevention and the care of physically ill youth with psychiatric comorbidities. He is actively involved in national medical education, service development, and quality improvement, including leadership roles in the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, American Association for Emergency Psychiatry and the American Association of Directors of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
