From Trauma Awareness to Trauma-Informed Action

Workshop Description: This interactive workshop provides an applied introduction to trauma-informed services for children and families across human services sectors, including education, healthcare, behavioral health, juvenile justice, and community-based care. Using a problem-based learning approach, participants will work through a realistic case scenario to examine how traumatic experiences, developmental factors, family context, culture, systems involvement, and community conditions may shape a child’s responses and needs.

 The workshop emphasizes cultural humility, transparency, resilience, and collaborative decision-making, helping providers shift from punitive or detached responses toward compassionate, developmentally informed, and coordinated support for children, families, and the professionals who serve them.

About the Presenters:

Dr. Dr. Polly Gipson Allen is a Clinical Associate Professor and Associate Chair for Belonging and Community Engagement in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Michigan Medical School. A licensed clinical psychologist, she serves as Medical Director of the Trauma and Grief Clinical Program. She is involved in several NIH- and HRSA-funded studies focused on youth suicide prevention and trauma-informed care in emergency settings. Dr. Gipson Allen brings extensive experience in crisis intervention, brief interventions, and community-engaged research to her work with youth and families in clinical and emergency care environments. In addition, she serves as a CDC-funded Community Engagement Liaison for the University of Michigan’s Injury Prevention Center, advising on strategies to ensure communities are represented across all facets of the injury prevention infrastructure and serving on the center’s core leadership team.
